Ceramic Blades: Sharp, Long-Lasting, Rust-Free

Ceramic blades present a modern alternative to traditional metal blades, and due to their exceptional properties, they offer a remarkable advantage across various applications and industries from food processing industry to medicine and manufacturing.
Ceramic blades are made from advanced materials, typically composed of zirconium oxide, or from a metal core, such as steel, and coated with a layer of ceramic material. These blades possess extreme hardness, unmatched resistance to wear, and longer retaining of their sharpness when compared to metal blades.

Baucor manufactures and supplies both standard and custom size ceramic knives and ceramic blades for all kinds of use, regardless of its industry or application. Our ceramic knives and blades are made from a wide variety of top quality Zirconium based ceramics. We are highly specialized in manufacturing custom ceramic knives in circular, straight and even odd shapes per sample and drawing. If you need your ceramic knives manufactured to your exact requirements, please contact us now.

Advantages of using Ceramic blades
There are many advantages of using ceramic blades:
- Unparalleled hardness:
Ceramic blades are made or coated with ceramic which gives them unparalleled hardness, outperforming steel blades and knives. - Chemical resistance:
Ceramic is a non-reactive material to most chemicals, acids, and alkalis, which means that it will not corrode, rust, or impart material flavors to food which makes it ideal for cutting food or working in harsh environments. - Hygiene:
The non-porous nature of ceramic prevents bacteria buildup, hence making it ideal for applications where blade contamination must be avoided, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing. - Non-conductive:
Ceramic blades do not conduct electricity or heat which makes them safer to use in various applications.
How Ceramic blades are manufactured?
Solid ceramic blades
- Powder preparation:
The process of manufacturing starts by preparing the ceramic powder, mainly zirconia, and infusing it with binders and other additives to achieve the desired properties. - Shaping:
The ceramic powder is meticulously molded and pressed in a mold that has a cavity shaped in the desired blade shape using manufacturing processes such as hot pressing, dry pressing, or injection molding. - Sintering:
The pressed ceramic particles are then fused using a high-temperature firing process called sintering to form the blade’s shape. - Finishing:
Finally, the blade undergoes a meticulous polishing process to refine its surface to a razor-sharp edge.
Ceramic-coated blades
- Cutting:
Manufacturing ceramic blades requires cutting a metal sheet using a CNC machine to obtain the blade's shape. CNC machines provide high-precision cuts. - Surface Preparation:
Next, the blade’s shape is cleaned and roughened using sandblasting or etching to create a textured surface that improves the adhesion of the ceramic coating. - Applying ceramic coating:
After preparing the surface, the blade is ready to be coated with ceramic material. We provide innovative ceramic coating methods including:
i) Physical vapor deposition (PVD): A ceramic material is vaporized and deposited on the blade's shape. The deposited ceramic material forms a thin and uniform layer.
ii) Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO): Immersing the steel blade in an electrolyte solution and applying a high-voltage current to create a ceramic oxide layer on the coated surface.
iii)Thermal spraying: Melting a fine powdered ceramic material onto the steel surface at a high velocity which solidifies instantly to form a thin layer of coating. - Finishing:
To improve the bonding of the ceramic layer, the blade is cured at high temperatures, followed by a polishing process to eliminate imperfections and to create a sharp edge.
Ceramic blades in action
Ceramic blades are often used in machines that uselinear or rotational cutting motion to cut materials. These machines typicallyhave a cylinder or a motor that holds the blade and causes it to move. The cut materialcan be fed into the machine automatically or manually and held in place usingclamps.
